Indian reservations in Washington Territory, correspondence of Isaac I. Stevens and the U.S. Commissioner of Indian Affairs in 1856 and 1857, 1855-1858.

This collection consists of all photocopies. There are copies of Governor Stevens' reports of Aug. 28th, 1856 written to the Honorable George W. Manypenny, Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Washington, D.C. The letters show Gov. Stevens' initiative in correcting every possible shortcoming of the treaties made with the Nisqually and Puyallup tribes. Corrections were made when the land assignment proved insufficient or not suited to their needs, as timber land was of little value to them. The photocopies were made from the collection at the Tacoma Public Library.
